Private Message to Aldofilius Leach, BNSP

Aldo,

Yesterday the most extraordinary thing occurred, which it is my duty to report to you as Director of the BNSP. Assume you will continue in that capacity under the Provisional Government? If not, do say immediately, dear fellow, and I shall appoint Gimlet the acting Director of the PG north, as it were.

In any event, if you could trouble yourself to make an adjustment to the rolls. I've received a complete record of training and examination certifications of one Hermione Jane Granger, muggleborn, at the hands of none other than Severus Snape.

Severus's letter tells me that she is ready (or very nearly) to sit examination for Mastery. I've fully reviewed his documents and her own journals, as well as observed her in the Potions laboratory yesterday. I must say that, barring a catastrophe on a Master-level Potion under examination, I quite agree with his assessment. Alas, as he is no longer with us, we shall need a sponsor in his stead and a second to observe the form of inquiry. Under the circumstances, your support in her achievement would, I suspect, go far to ingratiate you with Albus's little revolutionary group. I do advise cooperation, it's the way the world is going, after all.

Naturally, you may find it difficult to leave New London at this time, and we cannot be expected to come there in the short-term. You would be wise to make the effort, if you can. If not, Gimlet and I will agree upon a mutually convenient time and send you the results.

Meanwhile, there can be no doubt that Severus observed all the appropriate protocols and, if the work he has provided is any indication, we would be wholly remiss not to confer her current rank of Journeywoman upon her as soon as possible. In fact, if you could kindly backdate the entry to... let me see, ah yes: 28 May, 1997. I can forward the necessary documentation if you require more than my word.

Private Message to Blaise Zabini

Mr Zabini,

If my notes are correct, you are not enrolled in Herbology and thus have a free hour at present.

Kindly report to my office where you will find representatives from Magical Law Enforcement. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure: They have some questions for you concerning your late step-father's death. All quite routine, I'm told.

Should you desire to speak to me afterward, or if you have any concerns following your interview, I will be available during the lunch hour. Of course, you may be excused from Potions if necessary.

Private Message to Dean Thomas and Madam Pomfrey

Mr Thomas,

It is now fifteen minutes past the hour. I trust you are well but if your absence in my classroom indicates that you have met with a mishap, I hope, Madam Pomfrey, you will inform me of such.

Particularly as Professor Sprout happened to mention you did not attend Herbology this morning.

Presumably you will present a credible explanation when you do choose to grace us once more. You are, of course, familiar with the penalties should your explanation fail to impress.

You may, however, join the lesson in progress, should it turn out that you were merely delayed on some matter of personal business. We will discuss the appropriate disciplinary measures after class, depending on how tardy you are.

Private Message to Antosha and Razzer

I don't know about you lads but I could certainly use a libation this evening - to celebrate the much-needed break from classes, if no other reason. (And I'm certain we can all think of ample other reasons.)

Razzer, please extend the invitation to Aurora as well. I know you three frequently make plans for Fridays.

Private Message to Antosha and Razzer

Gentlemen,

You may well wonder why I am communicating via journal when we are about to take breakfast and have a staff meeting this afternoon, all splendid methods of consulting fellow colleagues on many a matter of academic discipline. However, when I explain to you the circumstances under which I write, you may understand why I did not wish our conversation to wait, nor to be potentially overheard by prying ears.

This morning I had barely risen when Miss Lestrange presented herself at my door, in some distress. You see, last night, Mr Montague took it upon himself to entangle me in what I suspect must have been the most recent of Our Lord's tests of loyalty in our elite students, for he gave me to believe that if I waited with him at a particular spot in the dungeons near the entrance to Slytherin, I should find sometime shortly before midnight that Mr Finch-Fletchley would be returning from his 'nightly tryst' (his words, not mine). Mr Finch-Fletchley, to his credit, made no protestations and no fuss over the detention he deserved for breaking curfew and, of course, for loitering in areas of the castle where he could have no legitimate purpose. Mr Montague may feel himself rather smug at this entrapment but to my thinking, the more egregious issue was, in fact, the impropriety which he meant to expose, rather than his blatant manipulation of the situation.

Simply put: I cannot think how long this has been going on but it is certain that Miss Lestrange's esteemed parents ought to be informed of the children's conduct. Mr Finch-Fletchley is now of age; nonetheless the Jugsons would, I am sure, be appalled were they to realise the extent to which he has overstepped himself.

Enter Miss Lestrange this morning, urging me not to report back to her august mother and father. She spilled out a rather breathless explanation, attesting that her father already knew of their 'engagement' as she called it--and indeed, once she mentioned the word, I confess I noticed a ring on her finger--and assured me that her father had given his consent. Naturally, consent to a match is one thing; I pointed out that this surely does not mean her father approves of their liaisons. She swore they were nothing like as frequent as Mr Montague may have presented them, which only convinces me they are every bit as indiscreet as one might imagine.

I asked her how I might know that she wasn't embellishing the truth of this supposed betrothal. (I discount the ring; as I said, I had certainly not seen it before this morning and it is entirely possible it was a glamour put on for the occasion.) Miss Lestrange immediately offered your testimony, both of yours. Were you aware? What, if any, expectations does Mr Lestrange have for those of us charged with his daughter's proper care while she remains a student? Most importantly, can you conceive of any reason we should not inform him forthwith, despite the child's obvious affection for her, let us call him her fiancé?

Notwithstanding Madam Umbridge's directive, should you have need of a Professor, kindly address your inquiries to myself or Professor Sprout this evening.

Professor Vector is indisposed.

We shall be making visits to the Tower both before and after curfew, to make sure that you are managing in light of the unfortunate turn of events this weekend.

I expect Professor Vector will wish to see you all in the morning. She has asked me to convey her desire for a House Meeting at seven tomorrow as well.

Private Message to Poppy Pomfrey

Poppy,

I'm sure you won't see this until morning, but I happen to be awake and--well, while I am certain Healer Kerr would be happy to assist, it's not the sort of thing one wishes to--that is, you are already more than aware of my particulars.

I've run quite low on the paregoric tincture (particularly after today's wedding feast). If it's not too much trouble, could I arrange to get a resupply from you this week? I understand you've been staying not too far from the castle.

Presumably you saw Herself's message to us all this evening? Thank Merlin you no longer need pay her missives the slightest heed.

I wonder how she will feel when I share my gastric diary with her as adequate indication of how I've spent my holiday.

Well, do let me know if you've the time to mix up a fresh batch. Might as well stock up on the other, as well, while we're at it.

Otherwise, I hope you are well, dear lady.

Private Message to Poppy Pomfrey and Antonin Dolohov

If anyone asks, I'm inquiring about your health, Antosha (and of course I am) and our Poppy's position as your personal Healer.

In reality, I wonder if you might both be interested in a quick, quiet get-together over the holidays. An impromptu staff meeting, if you will.

That infernal woman. Tosha, you know my plan had been to stay on her good side and mitigate the damage she has wrought, to uphold Hogwarts' traditions and cultivate myself as her voice of experience and thus guide her toward decisions that will have the appearance of achieving the changes she wishes without enabling her to fully and completely transform the school.

So much for my success. I must be slipping into infirmity: I am accustomed to better results than this.

Poppy, since she sacked you, things here have been going downhill with the rapidity of a snowball descending a ski slope. Tosha, do you know I believe she actually threatened to dismiss me this evening, just because I suggested that she reconsider the harshness of Miss Perks' punishment, given the nature of the fib she told Capper.

I am sojourning at my home this holiday, in Ely. If you're free and able, I'd be glad to host a supper for my colleagues some evening, perhaps next Wednesday? Or another night if that is more acceptable. Septima's already agreed (this business over Capper's brother has her fuming) and I wonder if you'd ask Pomona, Poppy--I know you two frequently take treks together so Dolores might not suspect anything further if you contacted her through other means. Razzer and Aurora, bless them, may have too much to be going on with but Tosha, do feel free to extend my invitation to them, as I know you are fast friends and she cannot think to trace it to your weekly conversations.

I believe it goes without saying that Carpenter, Hooch and Acton cannot be trusted. They have been wholly hers for some time. Bathsheba might be turned but I think it best to leave her out for now. Irma...I am not sure but she, too, can be recruited if needed.

Rest assured I in no way intend to allow Dolores to railroad one of our best O.W.L. candidates simply because she believes the girl to be 'uppity'--I simply do not understand her intractability on this point.

I am certain we can, together, overcome whatever hold she has on whomever she has it. If not.... Well. I wasn't lying to her when I said I'd sooner retire than endure another year of this falderal. Hogwarts? Hogwash, more like it.

Well done, Slytherin!

Considering the changes to the roster, there can be no shame in today's outcome. Well done, everyone, truly, and particularly to our Captain.

Harry, it was a strategically wise decision to end things when you did, lad. As it is, Ravenclaw may have won the match but we remain in a leading position for the Cup.

Speaking of changes in the roster, Harry, I wonder if you might come and see me after supper this evening? I heard that you took a decision or two following the match, that will naturally affect the side going forward.

On a non-sporting note, N.E.W.T.-level students, the Potions classroom shall be open to your use every Monday between now and your examinations for supervised practice. O.W.L. students in Slytherin and Ravenclaw may use the classroom on alternate Tuesdays beginning 5 February, and Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors may use the classroom on alternate Sundays beginning 3 February, should you wish for additional brewing opportunities. I've posted the rota on the door for reference.

Finally, there shall be a House meeting tomorrow at noon.

Private Message to Draco Malfoy and Harry Marvolo

Gentlemen,

If you could trouble to stay following your Potions lesson this afternoon, there are matters concerning the House Quidditch side that we must discuss.

Mr Malfoy, I know you have Prefects' responsibilities directly after class; I have taken the liberty of speaking to Mr Diggory to excuse you for the first portion of the Prefects' meeting.

I am sorry that we're only just getting to these decisions now but, as you might imagine, there was a good deal of sorting out to do and the persons affected required private discussion prior to taking up the matter with you both.

Private Message to Antonin Nikolaevich and Rabastan Lestrange

I must thank you, gentlemen, for the liveliest staff meeting in...well, at least a year.

If what we heard via our Head Boy is true, there are at least a few Prefects involved in this ring, Quidditchers, counsellors for the Young Protectors' League--my dear fellows, you underestimated your influence and somewhat overestimated your ability to intimidate.

That said, I do hope we can hit upon a balanced mode of retribution, without decimating all four Houses of their leadership. After all, it's far from the first time students have engaged in similar behaviour--nor, I very much fear, shall it be the last.

Antosha, have you formed a plan yet to root out all the perpetrators? Naturally I am at your disposal if I may help in any way. Not, of course, that I have any claim to interrogatory fame such as you, dear fellow, but certainly 60 years of teaching does provide a modicum of talent for winkling out the truth from our charges.

Private Message to Poppy Pomfrey

Poppy,

Sending up Mr Crabbe and Miss Bundy. If you would be so kind as to reverse the pustule growth and treat any burns they may have sustained, I would appreciate it.

Really, one likes to applaud the students for their ingenuity in such projects as Mr Diggory's masks, but on the whole, I do wish he had waited until after lessons today to hand them out. Or that students would listen when we instruct them not to wear masks while preparing potions.

Miss Bundy need not return but do send Mr Crabbe back so he may determine the time of his detention.

Many thanks.

Private Message to Mssrs Fred and George Weasley

Gentlemen,

I must congratulate you both on your new-fostered dedication to the subject of Potions. While your exams in June showed promise but were on the whole, mid-grade, it is clear you have applied yourselves to the art over the long holiday.

However, the true test of a Potioneer is in his brewing, and there, as I am sure you already know, one of you missed the mark.

George, I do wish you to know that it was a difficult decision. Your Draught of Peace was a solid effort. (Solid, unfortunately, is not an acceptable state for a Potion.)

Knowing you both as I do, I am sure that the news that only Fred will be attending my lessons shall not deter either of you from continuing to share your academic efforts with one another. But alas, only Fred shall be able to continue within the practicum of my classroom.

Do please note, Mr Weasley, that your first lesson with me is this afternoon. See you then.

Private Message to Antonin Nikolaevich

Antoshenka, my boy:

Do forgive my not writing to you sooner. I've been quite remiss in reading my journal over the summer holidays. But I confess I'm much the more relaxed for having neglected it these weeks. Thus, imagine my surprise when I returned from my country cottage to learn that you are crossing the line to join our happy family of professors.

I don't doubt that others have already made the offer but do not hesitate to ask, should you have any questions about protocols or process. I'm delighted to welcome another of my House and one of my better pupils back to our hallowed halls. I daresay I can show you a trick or two that will make marking your students' work go a great deal faster, as well!

There are a growing number of us who appreciate a quiet evening's drink; I really must have a salon or two once school returns to session. But whether I am hosting a group or alone, my door is always open to you, Antonin Nikolaevich.

Private Message to Professor Sinistra and Professor Vector

It always seems to me as if the final staff meeting of the term is the longest. Have you ever noticed?

Pity Alecto had to spend so much of it in the loo.

Septima, I know you had hopes that Capper might pull through yet, but I'm sorry to say his Potion in today's exam was lumpy and the wrong shade of purple: Wholly unacceptable. Between that and his performance in his O.W.L., I fear there's no hope for the lad. Best prepare him while you can, if you haven't yet.

But I was quite pleased to see that you'll have a new House member and, I understand, a YPL participant, Aurora? I wonder that none of us saw that coming. Though I daresay he has a cadre of supporters. How do you think he'll fit in with MacMillan, Smith and the others? Odd, isn't it, as he's not spent much time with them at all this year. Not compared to the amount of time spent with Miss Perks, for example. Well, here's wishing him luck.

Private Message to Rabastan Lestrange

How are you feeling today? None the worse for that second bottle we opened? You seemed to need it at the time.

I shouldn't take Miss Greengrass' personal confession too much to heart. It had obviously been weighing on her but it is in the way of teenaged girls to over-dramatise everything when they are already distressed. Unfortunate that it came out in the throes of her much more serious concerns. I'm sure in the light of day, she has come to see how absurd the notion is.

Meanwhile, I've contacted Hieronymus and asked him to come to the school today, if possible, to determine what's to be done with his son. I agree with Minerva that if Miss Greengrass does not wish to pursue the matter, the best outcome may simply be to allow him to complete his NEWT examinations and then give him our leave to commence his post-Hogwarts career a month earlier than expected. Julius and Maghnus have agreed to escort Mr Bole to and from his exams; I don't wish him to consort with the other students while we resolve the question of whether he is to remain one of them.

I only wish Miss Greengrass or Miss Gamp had come to someone in authority sooner. So much of their troubles could have been avoided.

Private Message to Julius Avery

Julius,

If you could, kindly find Mr Bole and bring him up to Professor Lestrange's office.

If you need to speak to anyone in order to locate him, please do not tell them why you need to find him. Also, please do nothing to agitate him on your way upstairs with him.

And it should go without saying, Julius, that I should appreciate it if you said nothing to anyone else about bringing him up to see us.

Possibly it would be better to bring him by the west stairwells; Madam Pomfrey has taken Miss Greengrass to stay in the hospital wing tonight and I do not wish the two of them to see each other under any circumstances.

As always, I trust your discretion in this as in all confidential matters.
